The Mechanical Engineer V – Structural Analyst for Controllable Solid Propulsion is responsible for performing structural analysis in support of engineering efforts across a range of hardware systems while coordinating with mechanical design, materials, systems, and chief engineering teams from concept to qualification and production. The position reports to the Analysis and M&P Team manager and is part of the Strategic Systems Division based in Folsom, CA . This role is remote with a preference for in-office work at facilities in Folsom, CA, Reno, NV, Huntsville, Al, or Long Beach, CA. In this role, you will:
- Perform stress analysis to quantify safety margin against primary strength failure, fatigue life, and fracture using first principles based methods as well as more advanced analytical methods.
- Develop computational models of appropriate fidelity and perform simulations to predict the structural response of systems subjected to high pressures, extreme thermal gradients, and vibratory environments.
- Collaborate across disciplines to guide design decisions and risk management efforts throughout the hardware engineering lifecycle.
- Support the design, instrumentation selection, execution parameters, and data processing efforts of hardware tests to support physics-based modeling validation & verification, subscale and unit design, and full-scale system qualification & acceptance. Tests include static, dynamic, shock, and performance testing.
- Contribute to the development of closed-form, numerical analysis, and data analysis tool development. Develop and implement advanced analysis methodologies.
- Stay current with advancements in analysis techniques, advanced materials technology, and industry best practices.
- Document analysis process and results for internal & external stakeholders of various technical backgrounds. Be able to convey highly technical concepts with clarity. Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Applied Physics, or other related engineering discipline with 10+ years of experience OR Master’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Applied Physics with 8 years of experience
- Experience with FEA software (Ansys, Femap, Nastran, Abaqus) and linear & non-linear static, dynamic, and elastic stability analyses
- Motivated and able to perform duties autonomously without significant supervision
- Well organized and able to define appropriate scope & requisite inputs for tasks without definite boundaries and a succinctly identified path forward
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Applied Physics, or related field
- Direct experience with solid rocket motor design and analysis
- Experience with composite structure manufacturing and analysis
- Experience with CAD & PLM software (Solidworks, Creo, 3DX, Windchill)
- Scripting / automation experience for analysis workflows (Python, Matlab, Excel)
- Working knowledge of relevant MIL-SPEC, SMC, and NASA specifications such as MIL-STD-1522, SMC-S-006 / -016, NASA-STD-5012 / -5020
- Active DoD Secret clearance or the ability to obtain and hold a DoD security clearance Travel and Government Mandated
Requirements
- Travel up to 10% of time
- Ensure your recruiter knows the clearance needed and TA will add the required verbiage such as ITAR The good faith base salary range for this role is $157,700 –$ 218,300 at the time of this posting. Where you fall within the range depends on your experience, skills, and location. This range reflects base salary only and does not include benefits or bonus/incentive. This range may be adjusted in the future. This position is incentive plan eligible. The position may be eligible for lump-sum bonus upon hire.
