Posted Date 8/21/2026 Post End Date 9/4/2026 Job Description This is technical support work involving the evaluation, installation, operation, repair and preventive maintenance of desktop computers, computer systems and desktop applications. The work requires knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in the installation and maintenance of personal computer hardware and software applications and the ability to provide on site training when needed which is acquired through a combination of training and on the job experience. Contacts require skills in understanding and influencing people which are important in providing client services and resolving system operational problems. The work is standardized in that tasks are covered by substantially diversified procedures and specialized standards governing the operation of computers and peripheral equipment and, because of changing priorities or differing situations encountered in the work environment, incumbents have the latitude to consider which among the many procedures and specialized standards should be followed, and in what sequence, to assure optimal system operation. The work is performed mainly in an office environment but field work may be required at branch locations where there are some risks and hazards which are known, predictable and controllable. Operates a motor vehicle, computers, and electronic equipment related to the installation, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of desktop computer, computer systems and desktop applications. The physical demands include walking, standing, sitting, stooping and bending, and occasionally lifting objects weighing less than 50 lbs. The work is performed under limited supervision where the assignments are subject to established standards, policies and procedures. The worker plans and organizes the work, determines priorities, and the work is reviewed usually after the fact, in terms of quality, volume, timeliness, and for adherence to established methods, standards, and policies. Examples of Work
- Evaluates, installs, operates, and conducts preventative maintenance on all computer equipment, including hardware and software.
- Maintains specific and complex settings on state computers and printers.
- Maintains surveillance systems including systems and client computers and preparing video extracts as requested.
- Responds to trouble calls from users.
- Troubleshoots and repairs or reports hardware and software problems.
- Implements and deploys new images for hardware refresh on all computer systems.
- Recommends technical, policy and procedural changes to resolve recurring problems.
- Maintains desktop and laptop computers for mobile field inspectors, which have specific hardware and software settings.
- Maintains assigned vehicles to include fueling, washing and minor servicing.
- Implements file management and routine/preventive maintenance procedures.
- Trains users on standard and customized software including word processing, spread-sheet, file transfer, file extract, database, email, etc.
- Configures operating systems.
- Seeks and gains knowledge in new technologies.
- Operates a motor vehicle, computers, and electronic equipment related to the installation, diagnosis, maintenance and repair of desktop computer, computer systems and desktop applications.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville’s competencies.
- Performs related duties as required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used in the evaluation, installation, operation, repair and preventive maintenance of personal computers and peripherals.
- Knowledge of microcomputer evaluation, installation, operation and preventive maintenance.
- Knowledge of standard software packages (word processing, spreadsheets, database, email, etc.)
- Knowledge of personal computer operating systems.
- Knowledge of help desk and desktop support customer service best practices.
- Ability to operate, install, maintain and upgrade personal computer hardware, software, operating systems, peripherals and related equipment.
- Ability to read, understand and apply technical computer hardware and software manuals.
- Ability to analyze, identify, diagnose and correct hardware and software problems.
- Ability to understand and apply effective file management practices.
- Ability to understand basic system design concepts.
- Ability to train and provide technical instruction to others.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.
- Ability to gain proficiency and earn certifications in new technologies.

- A two-year combination of education, and/or experience evaluating, installing, operating, repairing and conducting routine maintenance on personal computer hardware, software, operating systems, and peripherals.
