Job Posting Title: Laboratory Coordinator Position Type: Professional / Unclassified Department: LSUA ASA - Biological Sciences (Nathan J Sammons (00007928)) Work Location: LSU - Alexandria Pay Grade: Professional Job Description: Laboratory Coordinator DEPARTMENT: Department of Biological Sc iences and Department of C hemistry and Physics SUPERVISOR: Dean, College of Science, Technology & Mathematics PURPOSE: We are seeking a Lab Coordi n ator to manage the daily operations of our Biology and Chemistry teaching laboratories. In this role , you will oversee lab equipment and s uppl y maintenance, assist faculty and students in sett i ng up experiments, and ensure compliance with safety protocols. The Lab Coord inator will also handle inventory management and support administrative tasks such as preparing reports and coordinating lab-related activities and events. If the s ucc essful candidate holds a Master ' s degree , there may be an opportunity for instruction as wel l. Ideal candidates should have strong organizational sk ills , a solid understanding of laboratory operat ion s , and a commitment to maintaining a safe and efficient learning environment. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lab Setup and Maintenance : Prepare and set up laboratory experiments , ensuring that all equipment and materials are available and functional before classes begin .
- Inventory Management : Maintain an accurate invento r y of laboratory supplies , chemicals, and equipment. Place orders as needed to ensure laboratories are fully stocked.
- Safety and Compliance : E n sure all laboratory practices comp ly with institutional , state, and federal safety regulations , including the handling and disposal of hazardous materials.
- Equipment Maintenance : Oversee the cleaning , calibration, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and instruments. Arrange for repairs or replacements as needed.
- Student and Faculty Support : Assist students during lab sessions with the proper use of equipment and safe laboratory practices. Provide instructional support to faculty as needed for lab courses.
- T raining : Train students and teaching assistants on safety protocols, lab equ ipment uses, and proper procedures for experiments.
- Documentation and Recordkeeping : Maintain records of laboratory usage, inventory, and chemical storage. Ensu re all safety documents (SDS) are updated and accessib le.
- Supervision : Supervise student assistants or work -study stude nt s who help with lab preparations and cleanup.
- Teach introductory labs for biology or chemistry and labs for non-majors (Master's degree) QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education : A Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry , or a closely related field i s required. A Master ' s degree in a relevant discipl i ne is preferred and may allow for additional responsibilities such as instructing lab sessions.
- E xperience : Previous experience in a laboratory setting , particularly in an academic environment , i s highly desirable. Experience with l aboratory management , inventory control, and safety protocols is a plus.
- Technical Skills : Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment , techniques, and procedures used in both biology and chemistry labs. Knowledge of proper safety protocols and hazard management.
- Communication Skills : Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with faculty , students , and staff.
- Organizational Skills : Excellent at t ention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize responsibilities , and maintain accurate records.
- Teamwork : Ability to work independently as well as collaborate effect i vely with faculty, students, and other staff members. HOURS : Eight (8) hours per day, Monday - Friday 40 hours a week.
