Overview

The position of Speech Therapy Manager is responsible for planning, directing, implementing, coordinating, mentoring and improving the activities of all Speech Service line. This includes staffing and program development in Acute Care, Acute Rehabilitation, and Outpatient Services, at both Garfield Medical Center and Monterey Park Hospital. The position reports to the Director of Rehabilitation Services at each Garfield Medical Center. Speech Manager is responsible for planning, directing, implementing, coordinating, mentoring and improving the activities of all Speech service line. This includes staffing and program development in Acute Care, Acute Rehabilitation, and Outpatient Services, at both Garfield Medical Center and Monterey Park Hospital. Involved in direct patient care mininum of 50%. EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING

  • Entry level degree and appropriate licensure in Allied Health Profession required (Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Pathology).
  • Minimum five years patient care experience to include acute care, outpatient and inpatient rehab.
  • Supervisory experience, teaching, training and mentoring experience preferred.
  • Current BLS.

Responsibilities

Provides treatments to patients via direct pt. care or mentoring 10-50% of the time. Prepares and justifies capital budget for department based on sound principles and reasonable expectations. Prepares and justifies operations budget for department based on sound principles and reasonable expectations Adjusts staffing to volume, with good judgment demonstrated in the reduction, and/or increase of work hours.

Consistently remains within established budget SWB/UOS and supplies/UOS. Identifies and implements methods of controlling costs or generating revenue while providing maximum value to the patient/ customer, and the facility. (OP rehab) Monitors controllable expenses and adjusts spending requests and approvals appropriately Assures that all equipment utilized by OT, PT, ST, OP service is state of the art, fully operational and safe. Monitors and manages employee time and attendance records (E-Time) for accuracy and timeliness through either electronic or manual systems.

Recognizes needs; plans and develops improved processes (forms, methods, etc) to improve departmental operations. Demonstrates initiatives to improve own capabilities as a leader. Sets goals for self and participates in continuing education courses.

Cover vacations for other managers as needed: case mix, admissions, PT/OT/ST/OP rehab, meetings for other on the rehab team. Remains current in professional field. Promotes departmental growth through staff development, and expansion of services when appropriate.

Promotes appropriate in-service and educational events to provide staff development opportunities Able to problems solve by collaborating and collecting all information and then selecting the best approach to solve the problem. Effectively recognizes and rewards employees for outstanding performance. Role models standards of conduct and establishes and enforces expectation for staff to follow standards of conduct.

Coaches, counsels and disciplines employees. Provides ongoing feedback to staff. Recruits, interviews and selects competent and qualified staff.

Supervises, delegates, schedules and assigns work to achieve goals. Assures staff requirements are met on time (e.g. new employee orientation, initial/annual ethics, annual updates, competencies, etc.) Assesses qualifications and competency of staff and contracted staff. Conducts employee performance evaluations on time.

Develops implements and reviews a program of clinical training for students in OT, PT, ST education programs. Attends and participates in Manager’s departments head and Rehab. Department head meetings.

Conducts Departmental meetings at least 6 times per year. DFNB – Maintain for ST and help out others when needed. Cross help with G Codes.

Demonstrates an understanding of turnover relative to department. Works to minimize controllable turnover. Always provides proper notification and advance notice for absence or tardiness.

Help cover billing, phone calls, case management, triage, rounds, conference, case mix manager duties and admissions as needed. Assures Rehabilitation Services (PT, OT, SP, OP) and Acute Rehabilitation Program meets JC, Title 22, CARF, and AHMC Quality Management Standards (as applicable). Resolves patient complaints or grievances with emphasis on patient/family satisfaction Develops and implements policies and procedures that guide and support provision of services (OT, PT, ST, and OP).

Annually reviews and revises policies and procedures. Insures quality of care within own dept. or area. Effectively assumes administrative responsibility of OT/PT/ST and OP departments for the purpose of reports, documentation, payroll records, statistical requirements and other data required.

Exhibits willingness to resolve problems as they arise Completes assigned work on time and participates on team assigned activities: patient satisfaction, open house for rehab, marketing activities for rehab, rehab month. Schedule students and make sure contracts for each school are up to date, orient all students, be liaison from GMC with schools. Plans staffing appropriately to meet census needs Responsible for Community Relations and Marketing Rehabilitation Services with Community Physicians, Insurance companies, Hospitals, Health Care Professionals, Discharge Planners and Business Corporations to keep outpatient Visible in the community. (all) Always assesses and is sensitive to the patient’s physical, social and emotional needs as part of the overall evaluation and implementation of the therapy program.

Keeps patient/ families informed about their care in a timely manner; ie. Customers are up-to-date concerning any delay in care and are provided a time frame for addressing any concerns. Help with Stats for rehab: UR as needed, admissions and patient satisfaction.

Chart Audits as necessary, review and prep chart as needed for probe, target audits, and appeals. Coordinate training and staffing for MPH as well to include: SPH, Aspiration pneumonia, body mechanics, ergonomic assessments, skills and competency training. Performs other duties as assigned.
